MALAYSIAN CINEMAS: Amir Muhammad

Michael Guillen says:

When concerns were posed about piracy in Malaysia, Amir countered that “piracy is the best film school”, providing Malaysian independent filmmakers opportunities to see movies that the censors will not allow.

It’s interesting to see an American paying more attention to the Malaysian indie film scene than most of us do. On the other hand, Amir Muhammad’s blog is at The Last Communist

Negaraku in the key of S

Vincent says:

If you are convinced that this version of Negaraku is half-decent, go now and spread the good word.

Have a listen… maybe people’ll be more into singing the Negaraku with Umph from now on. It is in the key of S (Shred).

Our Masks

petrina7 says:

we begin young in lying to make ourselves look better and we think that people cannot see through us…how sad it would be to know that they do know, they do see, and though they do not speak of it, even obliquely, it hangs in the air, that knowledge that we are not all we seem. perhaps they even wonder what exactly we are trying to hide. what hidden weakness or insecurity makes us puff up, preen or pretend? only we know the answer, we who scuttle into the darkness when we are alone with ourselves, we are too frightened to even look at ourselves properly, right in the eye where it hurts most to know that we are not as strong, beautiful, whole, perfect as we think we are…

dr zakir's vast differences at interfaith talk

xpyre says:

The most interesting comment, however, his comparison of the “newsworthiness” of a 50 year old marrying a 15 year old with her consent, and that of a 50 year old man raping a 6 year old. Dr Zakir does not engage, and does not bring up, the pertinent question of the ethical considerations of marrying a woman below the age of consent, of course.

Xpyre discusses a talk on religion that’s been going on in MMU Melaka

Paying to conceive

Jennifer says:

This morning, on the way home after driving Lokes to work, a radio ad on IVF treatments was on, starting with a woman talking about how when we were young, we tried everything to avoid getting pregnant, and when we are ready, we try everything we can to conceive.

She then said something about IVF treatments and how she was now happily a mom of a six-month old.

I’ve never been a fan of expensive fertility treatments. Lokes and I agreed a long time ago that if we were unable to have children, the furthest we would go is oral medication. If that didn’t work, we would just leave it to nature since we did not have the money for it anyway.

Are you for, or not for fertility treatments? Jennifer Tai gives her opinion.

Reading On

Kiffer says:

One thing i like about my blog… is that not many people read it. I think i used to have a pretty good number of visitors, back in some hey-day peak of my blog, but today, i think i can count the number of readers in one hand. And while that sometimes defeats the purpose of having a blog, i think it is a generally good thing.

A blogger’s thoughts on the blogosphere.

Drama in blogging?

Antonia says:

I would think a blog/journal as a reflection of oneself and surroundings. Therefore, I would also like to think that this is where I could be who I am really and this is where I could express my inner thoughts and my personal opinions. I don’t have to fabricate stuff to encourage readership. I don’t have to be a gossip column, just to encourage participation from others. I post what I feel like posting, I post what is of interest to me at a particular point in time. I can post the serious and I can post the mundane. I can post about what’s hot now, and I can post about something obscure that nobody heard of. Audience participation will come naturally, when they think a particular entry deserve to be discussed.

I’d rather be a productive journal-er than a popular blogger.

It’s a bit controversial topic, saying local blogs are too dramatic.

Sometimes Miracles Do Happen...

Shahriman Latif says:

A while back I made a fundamentalist cry. He was talking about an amendment to the Federal Constitution. I told him it could never happen, ever. But then a lot of people were writing about it, and a lot of people were writing on the basis of sentiment and ignorance rather than actual interest in the law.

The lawyer speaks.

Overdue Primer

Bustaman says:

See the picture above. See the oval thing on the left. It is called a toilet bowl. Sit on the toilet. For gentlemen using the bowl as a urinal (next pic), lift the lid and the seat first. The Management aims to please so you aim too, please. Otherwise, sit, sit, sit.

A rough tutorial to using a public toilet properly. Judging by the state of some of our public toilets, we sure as heck need this!

Feeling bad for being a UK size 8

Otto says:

“What size do you wear?” she asked.

“UK size 8,” came my reply, as I browsed through a rack of trousers on 50% offer.

“Are you sure?” she asked, sounding absolutely surprised, “I am wearing a size 6 only, you know?”

Harping on someone else’s bad habits may be a reflection of his or her own dissatisfaction with him or herself.

It still makes me feel like scratching nitpickers’ eyes out.
